Hi Guru's

We are contemplating building a highly available environment for our Mgmt Information Portal that was developed using Oracle App Server. At this time App Server is running on two servers. A quad-processor server hosts the mid tier and a dual-processor server hosts the infrastructure. What kind of hardware configuration would you recommend for the highly available environment in terms of number of servers/processors? I need this info to determine the cost of additional software. Also, will we need RAC licenses to build this environment?

Please any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Define "highly available environment" in your terms.
Adding more processors help nothing with availability.

RAC protects from a single node failure (database).
In RAC, the same database is mounted in many nodes.
If One node goes down, the rest will continue to serve.
If the database goes down, RAC is of no use.
That is why for a real high available environment you need dataguard or similar implementation.
That covers the database.

You still have the mid-tier and infrastructure nodes.
Infrastructure has its own small seed database.
You can have clustered infrastructure/middletier, if you can afford the $$$. Look into cold/active failover clusters depending on your need.
Look into loadbalancers/switches. Web cache / HTTP server clusters and hardware clusters are worth to have look into.
